The Turning Tables: California's 2024 Election Results

(PBS, 2024)
(PBS, 2024)

The results of the 2024 California election showed a complicated political environment, with both parties experiencing mixed results and a decline in voter turnout. In order to give the GOP a slim House majority, Democrats hailed huge successes in the flipping of three congressional seats that had been held by Republicans. They did, however, face difficulties, such as a nine-point decline in turnout from 2020, particularly among Latino voters who were frustrated by perceived government inaction and affordability concerns. Republicans gained three state legislative seats and turned ten counties red in areas that have historically been Democratic strongholds. Voters responded favorably to their emphasis on crime and living expenses. Additionally, the GOP won on ballot measures, especially Proposition 36, which strengthened the penalty for crimes. Latino voters were crucial because they voiced their displeasure with Democrats' failure to address issues of affordability. Despite their continued Democratic-leaning, the lack of zeal highlighted a larger problem with delivery and trust. Across the country, Democrats' use of abortion rights as a central issue produced a range of outcomes, with some districts seeing success while others, particularly in the Central Valley, saw failure. In order to get ready for 2026, both parties are examining these tendencies, highlighting the significance of voter participation, customized messages, and tackling urgent issues like the economy and housing. The results show that California's political landscape is changing, which might have an impact on upcoming elections.
