Every year on January 13th, we celebrate Korean American Day. This day marks the first arrival of Korean immigrants to America in 1903, starting the rich history of contributions Koreans have made to this nation.
Brief History of Korean American Day
On January 13th, 1903 the immigration of over 100 Koreans began in the U.S. as they arrived in Hawaii seeking opportunities for success in the sugar plantations. Over the years with new immigration policies and the Korean War, Korean families continued to seek opportunities in America fostering a deep and diverse cultural presence. In 2005, Congress officially declared January 13 National Korean American Day. This is a day not only to remember the original Korean immigrants but to also recognize the significant contributions and achievements of modern Korean Americans.
Inspirational Korean American Figures in Modern Society
The Korean American community is deeply rooted in various fields with trailblazers that have succeeded in politics, sports, art, and many more.
Andy Kim- A U.S. Congressman/Senator from New Jersey, Andy Kim recently made history by becoming the first-ever Korean American to serve in Congress. Senator Kim is known for his contributions to public service, healthcare, and education.
Chloe Kim- An Olympic snowboarder, Chloe Kim became a household name after winning gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics at just 17 years old. Her historic achievement inspired countless young athletes and highlighted the contributions of Korean Americans in sports.
(KORELIMITED, 2022) Park Yong-man: A pivotal figure in the early 20th century, Park Yong-man was an activist and leader in the Korean independence movement. His work in the U.S. rallied support for Korea's fight against Japanese colonial rule and strengthened the bond between Korean Americans and their heritage.
